Aika Robredo gunning for public office? Mom VP Leni says ‘running is not an option for her’

MANILA, Philippines — For now, Aika Robredo is not gunning for any position in public office, according to her mom Vice President Leni Robredo.

It was through a Facebook post on Thursday when Robredo disclosed that her eldest daughter is not seeking to follow in the footsteps of her parents.

The Vice President first shared a news article that featured Aika carving her own path in public service.

“Aika has shunned a number of invitations to run for public office during the 2019 elections, choosing instead to continue with her work for the communities sans politics,” the Vice President said.

Robredo then remembered that Aika was born six days before her Jesse, the Vice President’s late husband was first elected as mayor of Naga City.

“When her Papa became DILG Secretary, he wanted her to help him out initially but she refused to be directly involved in his work and preferred to help in the background. When Jesse died, she became my co-parent and did a very active role during my two campaigns. Again, while still choosing to do work in the background,” Robredo said of her daughter.

“Sometimes, she’s busier than I am and she has imbibed her father’s discipline and work ethic. Always proud of how she turned out and for choosing the more difficult path of public service,” the Vice President added.

But as one netizen suggested, should Robredo run for the presidency in the next elections, Aika should try vying for governor.

The Vice President, however, told the netizen: “Dai pwede, one at a time lang. As of now, running is not an option for her.”

Like her father, Aika holds a master’s degree in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Meanwhile, Robredo previously dodged questions about her plans for the 2022 elections, saying that it wasn’t the right time to talk about politics during the Covid-19 pandemic.
