SC asks lawyers to avoid discussing anti-terror law case to media
MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday requested the parties involved in the ongoing oral arguments on the contentious anti-terrorism law to stop talking to the media as the case is still being resolved.
Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta made the appeal right before Tuesday’s oral arguments adjourned, noting that there are lawyers who have taken part in television interviews and have shared their opinion and the merits of the case.
“We would like to ask the lawyers to please refrain from being interviewed while these cases are pending resolution. You know the effect when one goes to the media and discusses his positions, it might affect the outcome of these cases,” Peralta said.
“Please refrain. We do not like that we would use our coercive power in disciplining lawyers,” he added.
The sub judice rule forbids public discussions and disclosures relating to judicial proceedings to avoid prejudging the issue, affecting the court, or hindering the administration of justice.
The oral arguments on the anti-terror law will resume on February 16, and the interpellation of the petitioners will be done on that day.
