TACLOBAN CITY –– Some local government units in Eastern Visayas have decided to cancel work and classes on Monday, Feb. 8, due to heavy rains spawned by a low-pressure area (LPA) east of Mindanao.
In Tacloban City, Mayor Alfred Romualdez issued an executive order early Monday, suspending both classes and work in public and private offices in the city due to bad weather that has caused flooding in several parts of the city.
As part of the order, the city mayor directed personnel of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, traffic office, and rescue unit to be on alert for any possibilities that may arise due to the inclement weather.
The mayors of Basey in Samar, Caibiran, and Naval, both in Biliran province, have also issued a one-day work suspension on their respective areas due to the LPA.
Naval town Mayor Gerard Espina said the suspension of work excluded those considered to be front-liners and assigned for emergency response.
The local governments in the region have also directed their respective disaster risk reduction management offices to be alert.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council warned that the non-stop rains in Eastern Visayas since Sunday evening could cause flooding or landslides.
