MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will hold a dialogue with University of the Philippines (UP) to review and possibly update their 1992 agreement. Jonathan Malaya, spokesperson for the DILG, gave assurance on Tuesday that the department would consult university officials and not end the pact unilaterally. “There is a need to review the 1992 agreement requiring the PNP to notify UP authorities before entering its campuses,” Malaya said. He said the dialogue was in keeping with the provisions of the 1992 UP-DILG agreement, which calls for regular meetings of at least twice a year or as often as necessary. Malaya said the meeting would be for “determining if the agreement is still relevant and serves to uphold public order and safety [on] UP campuses.” The 1992 UP-DILG agreement was signed by former UP president Jose Abueva and then interior secretary Rafael Alunan III. —Jeannette I.
