P60M worth of smuggled cigarettes from China seized

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has intercepted two containers filled with more than 1,000 packages of undeclared cigarettes worth P60 million from China at the Manila International Container Port. The BOC said the shipment was bound for the Philippine Economic Zone Authority zone in Cavite and was consigned to YJC International Corp. A total of 1,599 boxes of Mighty cigarettes were found in the shipment declared as plastic frames, round tubes, plastic bags and plastic sheets. “Upon physical examination, it was discovered that the shipment actually contained 1,599 packages of cigarettes with the brand of Mighty and estimated to have a market value of P60 million,” the BOC said. A warrant of seizure and detention was issued against the shipment. —Tina G. Santos
