10 new volcanic quakes recorded on Mt. Mayon

LIGAO CITY –– The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 10 new volcanic earthquakes on Mayon Volcano during a 24-hour observation period, its bulletin said on Thursday.

Mt. Mayon, which has remained under Alert Level 1, has so far registered 34 volcanic quakes since Jan. 1, the Philvocs said.

Dr. Paul Karson Alanis, senior science research specialist and officer in charge of the Mayon Volcano Observatory Station at Ligñon Hill in Legazpi City, said the quakes were most likely triggered by the almost daily rainfall in Albay province since the start of 2021.

Mt. Mayon, one of the country’s most active volcanoes, straddles the cities of Legazpi and Tabaco and the towns of Camalig, Daraga, Guinobatan, Ligao, Malilipot, and Santo Domingo.
