Low pressure area sighted near Zamboanga City

MANILA, Philippines — A low pressure area (LPA) brewing near Mindanao will bring rain on Tuesday across the Visayas and Mindanao, as well as over Palawan province, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

The weather disturbance was embedded within the intertropical convergence zone, a region near the equator where the northern and southern trade winds meet.

Pagasa said that the LPA was estimated at 85 kilometers south southeast of Zamboanga City as of 3 p.m. on Monday. But the weather bureau earlier said that there was a low chance that it would develop into a tropical depression.

However, residents in Palawan, Visayas and Mindanao can expect cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rain showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday due to these two weather systems.

Scattered showers are also expected on Tuesday over Bicol region and the provinces of Quezon, Mindoro, Marinduque and Romblon due to the tail-end of the frontal system, or the area where cold winds from the northeast monsoon clash with warm tropical winds.

The prevailing northeast monsoon, locally known as “amihan,” will also bring cloudy skies and rain over Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, Cordillera, Aurora and Southern Luzon, Pagasa said.

The cold winds from amihan, bringing chilly temperatures, are expected to persist until February.
