MANILA, Philippines — Seven out of 149 hospitals in Metro Manila are under critical level in terms of bed capacity solely for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) data from the Department of Health (DOH) as of January 13 show.
This figure increased from six hospitals recorded as “critical” last Jan. 8, consisting of 150 hospitals.
Of the hospitals under the “critical” level, only the Ospital ng Muntinlupa reached 100 percent bed occupancy.
The DOH classifies occupancy levels for COVID-19 beds in health centers as either critical, high risk, moderate, and safe.
Hospitals under the critical level have already reached more than 85 percent of their bed occupancy for COVID-19 patients.
Hospitals are classified as high risk if 70 percent but not more than 85 percent of its COVID-19 beds are occupied.
Hospitals with a COVID-19 bed capacity of from 60 to 70 percent rate are classified as moderate.
And hospitals fall under the “safe” level if the bed utilization rate is less than 60 percent.
The bed occupancy rate for the whole of Metro Manila remains at the “safe” zone with 35.5 percent, or 2,480 out of the 6,988 total beds occupied.
INQUIRER.net analyzed the most available data, which is on Jan. 13, 2021, based on the DOH’s COVID-19 tracker.
The article aims to show how prepared Metro Manila hospitals are if a sudden surge in COVID-19 infections should happen.
