MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has rejected an extension of his term even if it would be given to him in a “silver platter.”
Duterte made the pronouncement in a speech at the inauguration of the Metro Manila Skyway Stage 3 on Thursday amid moves in Congress to amend the 1987 Constitution.
“Kaya nga hinihingi ko ang Congress, akala nila, talagang mga term extension. Maski ibigay mo sa akin in a silver platter, maski ibigay mo sa akin libre another 10 years, sabihin ko sa iyo, p***** i** mo, iyo na lang ‘yan. Tapos na ako,” Duterte said.
(I’m asking Congress, they thought it’s term extension. Even if you give it to me on a silver platter, give me a 10-year extension for free, I will tell you, just keep it to yourself. I’m done.)
Earlier, Malacañang dismissed as a mere rumor claims that the push for Charter change is meant to extend the term of elected government officials.
Senate President Vicente Sotto III also said the President did not mention anything about term limits or extension during a meeting attended by some senators and congressmen last year.
The House of Representatives, meanwhile, resumed this week debates on Cha-cha, emphasizing focus on “restrictive” economic provisions of the Constitution.
