TUGUEGARAO CITY –– Rescuers on Tuesday stopped their search for two missing fishermen due to heavy rains and strong waves in the island-town of Calayan in Cagayan province.

In a statement, Calayan Mayor Joseph Llopis said the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine Air Force had launched a search-and-rescue operation last week but failed to find the missing fishermen.

The two fishermen, Herbert Balmes, 52, and his brother Charles Balmes, 48, ventured into the sea on Dec. 28 using their outrigger twin-engine motorized boat but did not return home.

The brothers, both residents of Barangay Magsidel, could have encountered strong waves, officials said.

Llopis urged villagers to heed gale warnings to avoid accidents at sea.
