MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines’ tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 479,693, after the Department of Health (DOH) logged 937 new infections.

According to the Department of Health’s daily case count, the new cases drove the number of active cases to 21,997.

The DOH noted a decrease in reported cases on Tuesday due to a decrease in the number of patients seen in laboratories during the New Year.

The health department reminded the public to be cautious in interpreting the numbers as in increase in cases in the coming weeks is still possible.

“The DOH continues to assess the extent of the effects of the holiday season on COVID-19 transmission. The DOH asks all stakeholders to be vigilant in guarding against complacency in the fight against COVID-19,” it said.

Majority or 81.4% of the active cases have mild symptoms, 8.5% are asymptomatic, 3.3% are having severe symptoms, while 6.2% are in critical condition.

The DOH also logged 114 new recoveries and 58 fatalities, raising the total to 448,375 and 9,321 respectively.

Davao City logged the most number of new coronavirus infections with 85 cases, followed by Isabela (54), Agusan del Sur (49), Pampanga (48), and Misamis Occidental (43).

DOH said it removed five duplicates from the total case count, four of which are recovered cases.

Meanwhile, 14 cases previously tagged sa recoveries are reclassified as deaths.

Nine labs were not able to submit their data on Jan. 4.
