MANILA, Philippines — A policewoman assigned in Malabon City was arrested for allegedly firing her firearm indiscriminately during the New Year’s Eve celebrations, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Friday.

PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Ildebrandi Usana identified the cop as Police Staff Sergeant Karen Borromeo who is assigned at the Malabon City Police Station.

Usana said the incident happened at around 7:45 p.m.  A concerned citizen reported hearing gunshots in their neighborhood.

Borromeo, who was later arrested, turned over her firearm and is currently detained at the police station.

“We assume na ‘yung pagdi-discharge niya illegally ng firearm is something personal to her,” Usana said.

“Maaaring siya ay nakainom, maaaring siya ay nabuyo ng kanyang mga kasamahan doon sa lugar ng pinangyarihan o maaaring gusto niya lang gumawa ng bagay na hindi niya inakalang magreresulta sa impormasyon galing sa citizen,” he added.

(She may have been under the influence of alcohol, she may have been pressured by her companions, or she just wanted to do so, not expecting it will be reported.)

The policewoman is facing criminal and administrative charges as well as dismissal proceedings, the PNP official said.
