TACLOBAN CITY — An alleged leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) and three other members surrendered to authorities in Eastern Visayas on Saturday.

“Ka Joseph,” the finance and medical officer of the “Banog” platoon, and his two companions yielded high-powered firearms to Police Regional Director Ronaldo De Jesus at the Camp Ruperto Kangleon, the regional Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters.

Another rebel identified as “Tomas” also surrendered to the 63rd Infantry Battalion and the Naval Intelligence Security Group on the same day.

He turned over an M-16 Colt rifle; baby armalite, and some medical paraphernalia.

De Jesus lauded the decision of the rebels to surrender, saying it was a welcome development as government forces continued to battle with the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) which marked its 52nd founding anniversary on Saturday, Dec.26.

He encouraged those who are still in the armed movement to surrender and return to the folds of the law.

“I call upon all those who remain under the nonsensical influence of this communist group to finally abandon the armed struggle. The government forces are more than willing to accommodate your decision towards peace and progress,” De Jesus said in a statement.
