MANILA, Philippines — The 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Batangas and nearby areas on Friday, Christmas Day, is not likely to trigger a tsunami because of its depth, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
“Iyong lindol kanina 7:43 nang umaga, may magnitude 6.3. Ito pero ito ay malalim mga 74 kilometers. Ito ang initial paremeters, so mamaya magbabago ng kaunti pero ito po ay nasa may Calatagan, Batangas. Pero dahil sa lalim niyan wala po dapat ipangamba na tsunami,” Renato Solidum, the chief state seismologist, said in an interview with dzBB.
(The earthquake which was felt this 7:43 in the morning has a magnitude of 6.3. This has a depth of 74 kilometers. This is only the initial parameters so later it may change later but it is located in Calatagan, Batangas. But because of its depth we don’t have to worry about a tsunami.)
Solidum also said the Manila Trench caused the earthquake this morning.
“Kapag ganito ay pagsubsob ng West Philippine Sea sa Manila Trench. Manila Trench, ang earthquake generator, na madalas magdulot ng malalim na lindol sa Batangas,” he said when asked what triggered the Christmas Day earthquake.
(The earthquake was due to the collapse of West Philippine in Manila Trench. The Manila Trench is an earthquake generator which causes quakes in Batangas.)
The quake rocked Calatagan, Batangas and several parts in Luzon this morning.
