MANILA, Philippines — The policeman who shot to death a mother and her child was “tearful” as he expressed remorse for the crime he committed, Tarlac Police chief Noriel Rombaoa said Wednesday.

In an interview with Radyo Inquirer, Rombaoa said he was able to speak with Police Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca last Monday where the latter expressed regret over the shooting incident.

To recall, Nuezca shot to death mother Sonya Gregorio and her son Frank Anthony following an altercation in Paniqui town last December 20.

“Nung una ko siyang nakausap last Monday, [may] remorse doon sa nangyari. Talagang nagsisisi siya,” Rambaoa said.

(When I first talked to him last Monday, there was remorse over what happened. He’s remorseful.)

“Nanginginig iyong luha niya. Kung kaya niya ibalik, ay ibabalik niya ang pagkakataon, time  para maituwid ang pagkakamali niya. Andyan na yan so kailangan niyang harapin yung nagawa niyang pagkakamali which is good for him,” he added.

(He was tearful. He said if he could only turn back time so that he can correct his mistakes. But it’s already there so he needs to face the consequences of his actions.)

Rombaoa also assured that there would be no VIP treatment for Nuezca who is currently jailed.

“Walang VIP treatment. Lahat ng PDL (persons deprived of liberty) na nasa custody namin, kung ano ang treatment namin sa kanila, the same din kay Nuezca,” Rombaoa said.

(There is no VIP treatment. All PDLs in our custody are treated the same. However we treat the PDLs here, it’s the same for Nuezca.)

“Kung ano ang oras ng dalaw nila, the same din sa kanya. Sama-sama sila doon sa loob ng detention cell,” he added.

(It’s the same for the time of visits. They are also together inside the detention cell.) [ac]
