Valenzuela enforces firecracker ban

MANILA, Philippines — The Valenzuela government announced Wednesday that all types of fireworks are now banned in the city.

In a tweet, Mayor Rex Gatchalian said the city council has approved City Ordinance No. 833, Series of 2020, which prohibits “manufacture, sale, distribution, storage, possession, or use of all types of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.”

The ordinance stated that violators will be slapped with a fine of P5,000, or will be detained for up to 30 days.

Under the ordinance, businesses that will continue to manufacture fireworks within the city will have their permits suspended.

Metro Manila police chief Police Brigadier General Vicente Danao Jr. previously announced that all mayors of Metro Manila agreed to prohibit the use and sale of all kinds of firecrackers this holiday season.

In a previous televised speech, President Rodrigo Duterte also said he is mulling to ban fireworks for “public safety and public health.” — Zac Sarao, trainee
