MANILA, Philippines — Senator Pia Cayetano has urged the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases to exempt bikers and joggers from the requirement of wearing face shields, citing safety concerns.
In a statement on Tuesday, Cayetano said that as a cyclist, she knows how important it is to be fully aware of the surroundings while cycling.
She said a face shield could drastically impair one’s vision and perception of space, which may lead to accidents.
“I ask the IATF to consider exempting cyclists from wearing face shields,” Cayetano said.
“Moreover, recognizing the role of exercise in promoting mental and physical health, I also ask the IATF to exempt joggers from the requirement when jogging in open spaces, provided they observe social distancing measures,” she added.
Earlier, the local government unit of Valenzuela City has issued an executive order stating that cyclists passing through the city are no longer required to wear face shields.
The LGU said the EO was signed following consultation with cyclists who experienced the hazards of wearing face shields while riding bikes.
