Health protocols in place in churches during Misa de Gallo in Metro Cebu

CEBU CITY –– Authorities in Metro Cebu were able to fully implement the health protocols in churches a few days after throngs of people failed to practice physical distancing during the Misa de Gallo or the nine-day series of dawn Masses leading up to Christmas day this year.
“The closure of roads near the church premises and not allowing cars to park in the parking space of the Church during Mass really provide ample space for churchgoers,” said Emergency Operations Center head and Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera.
“The putting up of an extra sound system and video screen also helped. Overall, compliance with the minimum health protocols was observed,” he added.
As of Sunday dawn, churchgoers were seen maintaining physical distancing outside church grounds and into the streets. On Monday, Dec. 21, the same scenes were observed.
In Cebu City, government workers placed markers on the road to guide churchgoers on where to stay.
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma described the big crowd during the Misa de Gallo as a reflection of faith.
“They already showed the desire to go back to Mass,” he said.
Palma reminded the faithful to continue maintaining physical distancing and wearing of masks during the dawn Masses.
“Let us show that we are people who obey government policies,” he said.
The prelate said those who couldn’t attend the Masses may put a little altar in their homes and join the virtual Masses.
“Grace will be there,” he said.
