MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) will extend its no-disconnection period for nonpayment of electric bills until Jan. 31, 2021, according to Speaker Lord Allan Velasco.
In his letter to Meralco president Ray Espinosa on Nov. 30, Velasco asked the country’s biggest power distributor to give its customers until the end of January next year to settle their unpaid bills.
“After careful evaluation and consideration,” Espinosa told Velasco in his Dec. 14 reply that Meralco has granted his request.
“The extended grace period being given to our fellow Filipinos during the holiday season will provide much needed reprieve to those reeling from the devastating effects of the pandemic and natural calamities,” Velasco said on Sunday.
Meralco earlier imposed a Dec. 31, 2020, deadline for customers to settle their unpaid bills, extending its previous deadline of Sept. 30. INQ
