KUALA LUMPUR — Winter is the last thing you would associate Malaysia with. But the idea of a cooling holiday isn’t totally far-fetched at some interesting destinations and attractions in the country. If you need a holiday from our hot and humid climate, here are some places to experience some semblance of winter.
Mount Kinabalu, Sabah
There have been occasional sightings of ice crystals at the peak of Mount Kinabalu. Temperatures at the summit of the tallest mountain in Malaysia can hover between 0°C and -2°C. However, the ice shouldn’t be mistaken for snow. The naturally cold environment makes it ideal for puddles of water to freeze and form ice sheets.
If you’re not looking to scale the mountain, a holiday at the nearby towns Ranau or Kundasang will provide a relaxing and cooling stay too.
Cameron Highlands, Pahang
This scenic hill has long been a famous escapade for Malaysians. While you won’t find snowfall here, the cool surroundings certainly evoke a wintry vibe. Stroll the rose and lavender gardens or pick strawberries at one of the many farms. The tea plantation, with its picturesque hilly backdrop, is a great place for a quick stop and some afternoon tea.
Fraser’s Hill, Pahang
Another highlands destination in Pahang also offers a cool respite from the hot and humid weather. This cooling retreat is famous for its nature activities and cooling climate, being one of the last hill stations in the country. There are many nature trails that will bring visitors past beautiful and unique plants and flowers. While you’re up there, check out some of the historic colonial bungalows.
SnoWalk at iCity, Selangor
This arctic climate attraction spans up to two football fields in size. SnoWalk features ice sculptures that were shaped by sculptors from Harbin, China (which is renowned for hosting an annual ice festival). Apart from the sculptures, visitors can also experience snowfall, ice-sliding and build snowmen.
SnowWorld at Resorts World Genting, Pahang
A European-themed winter village awaits at this attraction in the highlands. Visitors can experience a sub-zero environment, complete with life-like snowfalls. There’s also changing day-to-night sceneries for that photo op. Kids and those young at heart will have tons of fun at the Toboggan Slide.
