MANILA, Philippines — The North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Corp. on Thursday said it would be transferring its radio-frequency identification (RFID) sticker installation and reloading sites at its toll plazas to help relieve traffic congestion in the area.

“NLEX Corp. also commits to transfer the existing RFID sticker installation and account reloading in the Karuhatan and Mindanao toll plazas effective immediately in order to improve traffic flow in the nearby areas,” NLEX said in a statement.

The move came after Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian decided to suspend NLEX’s business permit following the traffic congestion at its toll plazas.

NLEX, likewise, said it is committed to resolving “traffic-causing issues” such as RFID stickers that easily wear out, problematic sensors that cannot promptly read the stickers, and missing ‘loads.”

NLEX also started reimbursing motorists in Valenzuela, who were charged after passing toll plazas during the enforcement of the toll holiday, the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) said.

“I heard po in my conversation with one of the NLEx officials that they would reimburse,”  said TRB Executive Director Abraham Sales in an online press conference when asked for confirmation about the reimbursement of toll fees at Valenzuela.

In a tweet on Wednesday night, Gatchalian also revealed that the NLEX Corp. applied a reversal of motorists’ toll fees.

“They are now starting to reimburse,” said Gatchalian, sharing a screenshot of the text message proving the toll fee reimbursement of a social media user, who was charged after passing a toll plaza in the city.
