Easy is surely far from how 2020 has been and it’s rather daunting to think of the uncertain future that awaits us. Yet the newly-declared Colors of the Year for 2021 might just give us the conviction that it’s going to be a better one.
Pantone Color Institute, known for influencing color trends globally, has introduced two hues as the colors of 2021.: PANTONE 17-5104 or the Ultimate Gray, and PANTONE 13-0647 or the Illuminating.

Pantone’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman described Ultimate Gray as “emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation” such as the colors of pebbles on the beach,” while Illuminating is “a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity.”
The colors may be contrasting but when put together, the two colors speak about the promises of a new year despite global problems such as the COVID-19 pandemic, tropical cyclones and other natural calamities.
“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude,” Eiseman stated. “Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is the color combination that gives us resilience and hope.”
The company first named two Colors of the Year in 2016 with Rose Quartz and Serenity, for promoting gender equality. JB
