Today, January 31, is the 95th birth anniversary of National Artist for Music Jose M. Maceda. Born in 1917 in Manila, he was known for his fusion of avant-garde and Asian music and for his efforts on the inclusion of the study of Philippine instruments in the curricula of music schools in the country. Named a National Artist in 1997, Maceda died on May 5, 2004.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
