MANILA, Philippines — The number of patients with active coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections soared to 28,379 as of Friday, after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 934 new cases.

According to the DOH’s COVID-19 bulletin, 148 more recoveries also pushed the total count to 399,457, while 63 new recorded deaths bring the death toll to 8,509.  In total, 436,345 patients have been infected in the country.

In the same bulletin, the DOH also said that 1,197 patients turned out positive for the coronavirus out of the 25,708 who were tested — a difference of 263 with the new cases reported.

It was not mentioned in the bulletin if the remainder is still undergoing further verification or is subject to secondary testing to confirm coronavirus infection.

Still, most of the patients with active infections, or 85.4 percent experience mild symptoms only, while 6.9 percent are asymptomatic.  Another 2.5 percent exhibited severe symptoms while 4.9 percent are in critical condition.

The majority of the new cases stemmed from Quezon City with 75, then Laguna with 59, Baguio City, Bulacan, and Davao City with 34 each.
