TACURONG CITY –– A man carrying improvised bombs was killed in a shootout with the police in a village in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat province early on Thursday, Nov. 26.
Corporal Ellrey Dasmariñas, personnel of the Tacurong City police station, said the still-unidentified man was driving his motorcycle when flagged down for inspection at a quarantine control checkpoint in ECJ Montilla village around 5:30 a.m.
Instead of obliging the police officers, the man sped away with his motorcycle which bore no license plate.
As several police officers gave him a chase, the man fired at them said Dasmariñas.
Eventually, the man was hit as the law enforcers returned fire.
The police found out that the man was carrying two improvised bombs and a fragmentation grenade concealed in a plastic bag filled with rice.
They also recovered the caliber .45 pistol the man used to fire at the cops who pursued him.
Lt. Colonel Rey Egos, Tacurong City police chief, said they were still establishing the identity of the slain suspect.
Egos said the alert police officers prevented what could have been a bloody Thursday in Tacurong City had the suspect been able to slip through the checkpoint.
