Amihan affecting Cagayan Valley, N. Luzon; new LPA likely to enter PAR on Sunday

MANILA, Philippines — Overcast skies and rain are likely over Cagayan Valley and other areas in Northern Luzon on Thursday due to the northeast monsoon or amihan.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (Pagasa) said this Wednesday afternoon as it predicts the northeast monsoon would also bring slightly colder weather in Laoag and Legazpi, while easterlies or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean may cause rains in the eastern portions of Visayas and Mindanao.

It also said that the “tail end of a frontal system” has already ceased to affect the country’s weather.

Meanwhile, Pagasa said weather models still show a low-pressure area possibly entering the Philippine area of responsibility on Sunday, through the southeastern portion of the country.

“Sa kasalukuyan wala pa naman tayong binabantayang sama ng panahon na posibleng maka-apekto sa ating bansa in the next two to three days,” weather specialist Ariel Rojas said.

(At present, we have not monitored any weather disturbance that may affect the country in the next two to three days.)

“Pero nakikita pa rin natin sa ating weather models, possible po na by Sunday ay may isang low pressure area na makapasok sa ating teritoryo,” he added.

(But our weather models still suggest that a low-pressure area may enter our territory by Sunday.)

Due to the amihan, temperatures in Tuguegarao may go down to 21°C to 28°C; Laoag, 24°C to 31°C; Baguio City,  14°C to 24°C; and Legazpi, 25°C to 31°C.

However, it would be a warm Thursday for Metro Manila, according to Pagasa, as the nation’s capital region will experience 24°C to 32°C temperature while Puerto Princesa will have 26°C to 31°C.

Weather in Visayas and Mindanao, on the other hand, will be fair except for occasional precipitation due to the easterlies. The state weather bureau said Cebu, Iloilo, and Davao will feel temperatures at 25 to 32°C while Tacloban will be slightly colder at 24°C to 31°C.

As for sea conditions, Pagasa said gale warnings are still raised over the entire eastern seaboard of Luzon except for Quezon’s inland seas; Eastern Visayas; extreme northern Luzon; Ilocos Norte; and Ilocos Sur. It said the sea would be rough to very rough in these areas due to the northeast monsoon that fisherfolk and sea transport businesses using small boats are prohibited from operating.
