4.3 magnitude quake rocks Catanduanes

LEGAZPI CITY –– A 4.3-magnitude earthquake jolted Catanduanes on Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

A Phivolcs seismic instrument detected the tremor at 6:49 a.m. at 22 kilometers south of Baras town in Catanduanes.

The quake’s depth was measured at 84 kilometers. Phivolcs said it was of tectonic origin.

Four hours earlier or at 2:16 a.m., a 2.6-magnitude quake also jolted Masbate. The quake’s epicenter was 23 kilometers East of Pio V. Corpuz town.

Phivolcs said the quake was an aftershock of the 5-magnitude quake that shook Masbate on Sunday afternoon, with epicenter at 18 kilometers East of Pio V. Corpuz. The quake, of tectonic in origin, was measured at 18 kilometers in depth.

The quake was felt at different intensities in Masbate; several towns in Samar, Leyte, and Cebu; in Villaba and Tabango, Leyte; Calbayog City; and Catbalogan City in Samar.

It was also felt in Irosin, Sorsogon; Tacloban City; Palo, Carigara, and Jaro in Leyte; Mandaue City; Cebu City and Lapu-Lapu City.
