Ulysses maintains strength; Signal No. 3 up in 5 Luzon provinces

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Ulysses maintained its strength as five provinces in Luzon have been placed under Tropical Wind Cyclone Signal (TCWS) No. 3 on Thursday morning, the state weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the center of Ulysses emerged over the western seaboard of Zambales at 8 a.m. The typhoon is expected to slightly intensify as it moves away from the country’s landmass.

“Slight intensification is likely as the typhoon moves over the West Philippine Sea away from the landmass. On the forecast track, the typhoon may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility tomorrow [Friday] morning,” Pagasa said in its 11 a.m. weather bulletin

At 10 a.m., the eye of Ulysses was last spotted 85 kilometers west of Iba, Zambales. It is packing maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 200 kph while moving at 25 kph.

Tropical Cylone Wind Signal No. 3 was hoisted over west of Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac and Pampanga, Pagasa said.
