MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Wednesday denied claims that returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were being ushered to private swab testing centers, where getting tested for COVID-19 are pricier.
During a House transportation panel hearing, committee chair, Samar 1st Dist. Rep. Edgar Sarmiento, asked transport officials whether it is true that OFWs are being ushered to private laboratories in airports where they will be required to shoulder expenses for a COVID-19 test.
DOTr Undersecretary Raul del Rosario replied: “I can categorically say na hindi po ina-usher ang mga pasahero para pumunta sa mga private laboratory testing.”
He likewise denied allegations that OFWs are being charged as much as P20,000 for a COVID-19 swab test.
Manila International Airport Authority general manager Ed Monreal, meanwhile, said it is the choice of OFWs if they opt to get tested in private swabbing centers.
“‘Yung private kasi separate ang bayad, sila ang may choice para pumunta sa swabbing facility. At times, sila na ang personal na nakikipag-arrange,” Monreal said.
He explained that upon arrival, OFWs are briefed by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for the swabbing after which they are escorted to the PCG’s swabbing station.
The Philippine government is offering free COVID-19 testing for returning OFWs.
