Magnitude 5.0 quake rattles Batangas; intensities felt in Muntinlupa, QC

Update

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake (which was earlier recorded at 4.5 magnitude) hit Batangas and jolted other areas including Muntinlupa and Quezon City on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the earthquake struck at 1:25 p.m. eight kilometers northwest of Mabini town.

The quake was of tectonic origin and had a two-kilometer depth of focus.

State seismologists said the tremor also shook other areas at various intensities:

Intensity III- Batangas City; Malvar, Talisay, Tanauan, Alitagtag Batangas; San Pablo, Laguna

Intensity II- Quezon City; Mandaluyong City; Navotas City; Majayjay, Laguna; Dolores, Quezon

Intensity I- Malabon City; Pasay City; Talisay, Batangas; Sta. Cruz, Laguna

Instrumental Intensities:

Intensity IV- Calatagan, Batangas; Tagaytay City

Intensity II- Muntinlupa City; Dolores, Quezon

Intensity I- Quezon City; Carmona and Bacoor City, Cavite; Mauban, Quezon; Talisay, Batangas

Aftershocks strike Mabini town

Two hours later, another earthquake struck Mabini town, which was an aftershock of the magnitude 5.0 temblor.

The magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded at 3:23 p.m.

The tremor was also of tectonic origin, having a two-kilometer depth of focus.

Other areas also felt the earthquake, according to Phivolcs:

Reported Intensity II- Batangas City, Mabini, Talisay, San Luis, Batangas; Tagaytay City, Indang, Cavite

Instrumental Intensity IV- Calatagan, Batangas

Instrumental Intensity III- Tagaytay City

Instrumental Intensity II- Bacoor City, Cavite; Muntinlupa City

Phivolcs said that no damage was expected from both earthquakes.
