A man was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife after fasting for eight days during the Navratri festival in Chhattisgarh, India.

The husband killed the victim during the night of Oct. 23, the second to the last day of the event, as per Gulf News yesterday, Oct. 26. The said festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil.

Following the incident, the wife’s daughter-in-law found the woman’s dead body in a worship room. She then told her own husband while her neighbors reported it to the police.

Authorities later identified the suspected murderer as a man named Sabal. He stabbed his wife to death, according to the report. It was also discovered that the husband used to perform “black magic” often.

“Sabal has confessed his crime to the police,” a senior state official said. “He first told the villagers that some people had entered his house late at night, and they killed his wife.”

Despite his initial statement, police added that Sabal continuously changes his account of the murder. He even said that he suspected the character of his wife.

Family members also informed the police that Sabal had often beat up his wife and thought that she was cheating on him.

Police have since taken him into custody and charged him with a case of murder, as per the report. The senior official also assured the public that they will continue to investigate the case “from every angle.” Ryan Arcadio/NVG
