‘Quinta’ expected to make landfall over Bicol region Sunday evening

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression “Quinta” is expected to develop into a tropical storm, and further intensify to a severe tropical storm before landfall, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In a severe weather bulletin issued at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Pagasa said Quinta was expected to make landfall over the Bicol region between Sunday evening or early Monday.

Quinta was detected 610 kilometers east of Juban, Sorsogon, and was accelerating west north-westward at 20 kilometers per hour (kph).

The weather bureau added that the tropical depression was expected to move westward by Sunday, passing over Southern Luzon on Monday.

Quinta has maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Pagasa has raised tropical cyclone wind Signal No. 1 over the provinces of Marinduque, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, the northern part of Masbate and the southern part of Quezon.

Strong to near-gale force winds will be experienced within 36 hours in the areas placed under Signal No. 1.

“Based on available meteorological data, [Signal No. 1] may be raised over Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Rizal, Mindoro provinces, Romblon and the rest of the municipalities in Quezon in the next bulletin (11 a.m.),” Pagasa said.

Pagasa also warned that the trough of Quinta would bring light to moderate rains over Mimaropa and Bicol regions, Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro, Northern Mindanao and Caraga region.
