Head of Bulacan security unit, retired police officer, assassinated

CALUMPIT, Bulacan-The chief of the Bulacan Capitol Civil Security Unit was shot and killed here while he was headed for home in Pampanga late on Wednesday (Oct. 14), police said.

Retired Col. Fernando Villanueva, 61, suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the attack on Iba Este Bridge on Marcos Highway around 6 p.m.

Investigators said Villanueva was at the front passenger seat of his government service pickup when the suspects on a motorcycle opened fire at him. The pickup driver survived unscathed.

Although already wounded, Villanueva managed to alight from his vehicle and run for his life but the assailants followed him and shot him several more times, witnesses said.

Col. Ramil Santos, the town’s police chief, said the gunmen are now being hunted.

Villanueva was a bemedalled insurgency hero and a former Bulacan police director.
