House tweets ‘birthday countdown’ amid speakership row

While the House of Representatives bogged down in a power struggle, its official Twitter account created its own snafu, sending the netizens rolling in laughter.

MANILA, Philippines — Amid tensions at the House of Representatives Monday over the speakership row between Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and Speaker Lord Allan Velasco, a photo of a girl’s birthday countdown seemed to have been accidentally posted on the House of Representatives’ official Twitter page.

While the camps of Velasco and Cayetano traded barbs over the speakership issue, the House of Representatives’ Twitter account was also trending online because of its post around 6 p.m. on Monday, October 12.

Captioned “Almost my bday (birthday)!!” the post shows a photo of a girl with an overlay text “Only 6 hours until my birthday!”

The post was immediately deleted, but netizens were quick to take a screenshot of it, with some poking fun at the timing of the post, especially when tensions gripped the lower chamber.

Meanwhile, others expressed their disappointment over the handling of the account since it is the official page of no less than the House of Representatives.

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives said it had taken action over the “unauthorized tweet.”

“Appropriate measures were put in place to ensure the security of the account,” the House of Representatives said. [ac]
