Corona impeachment trial resumes

MANILA, Philippines—The Senate has resumed its impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona with Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares set to continue her testimony.

Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile opened the proceeding at around 2  p.m. on Thursday, the seventh day of the trial.

Henares was called back to the witness  stand  by the prosecution to testify on the income tax returns of Corona and his family.

Henares appeared  at Wednesday’s trial and testified on  the  income tax returns filed by the Coronas.

The Chief Justice has been accused of amassing ill-gotten wealth which the prosecutors said could be proven by the discrepancies in income tax returns he filed with the Bureau of Investigation and the properties he declared and did not disclose in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.

Corona’s alleged failure to disclose his SALN was one of eight articles of impeachment contained in the complaint filed against him.
