MANILA, Philippines — A riot erupted inside the New Bilibid Prison early Friday morning.

The riot was between the warring Sputnik Gang and Commando.

Bilibid spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag said the commotion started at 2:30 in the morning and ended at around 4 a.m.

He confirmed that there are casualties and injured but could not give the exact figure as the incident report has yet to reach his office.

The riot happened at the East Quadrant of Bilibid.

But a report from the Southern Police District said that there are nine casualties were found after the riot–seven members of Sputnik and 2 from Commando Gang.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said he already ordered the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) to submit a report about the incident as soon as possible.

“I have asked DG Bantag [BuCor Director Gerald Bantag] to investigate and submit a report to me asap,” Guevarra said in a text message.

BuCor, which operates seven penal institutions around the country including Bilibid is an attached agency of the Department of Justice.
