BRP Luna passes Navy sea trials

The Rizal-class missile frigate BRP Antonio Luna satisfactorily passed its first sea trials off South Korean waters last month, the Philippine Navy announced on Thursday.

Navy Public Affairs Office Chief Lt. Commander Maria Christina Roxas said the Luna’s (FF-151) hull, auxiliary machinery, propulsion systems and electrical system passed the trial held off Ulsan, South Korea, waters from Sept. 24 to Sept. 29.

The Luna is the second ship of the Jose Rizal-class frigate after the BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) was put in active service on July 10. The Rizal has also taken part in the world’s largest maritime warfare drill, the Rim of the Pacific exercise in August.

The Luna, designed by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries based on the Incheon-class frigate, is to be delivered by next year. —Jeannette I. Andrade
