Bus rampage through crowded Indian streets kills 9
NEW DELHI—Police say a bus driver went on a rampage on the crowded streets of a central Indian city, mowing down pedestrians and leaving nine people dead.
Another 27 people were injured in Wednesday’s mayhem in the city of Pune before police were able to arrest the 30-year-old driver. He is being held on murder charges.
Pune Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar says the licensed bus driver was on duty and “just went berserk.”
The Press Trust of India says police chased the bus for an hour as it smashed into cars and fleeing pedestrians. Traffic officers also fired on the bus in an attempt to stop it.
Officials have said nothing about a possible motive. Bus service officials are investigating.
Pune is about 125 miles (200 kilometers) southeast of Mumbai.
