BACOLOD CITY –– The mayor of Pontevedra, Negros Occidental and his wife tested positive for the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Mayor Jose Maria Alonso and his wife Mary Gerardine have fever and immediately underwent self-quarantine.
The mayor said he was informed on Thursday morning that he contracted the virus.
On Wednesday, he and nine others from his house, including his two children and mother-in-law, underwent swab tests at the Red Cross molecular laboratory in Bacolod City.
Alonso said they did not know where his wife got the COVID-19 infection as she barely went out of their house.
The only time she went out was to accompany her 89-year-old mother when she was swabbed last week and underwent an X-ray at the Riverside Medical Center in Bacolod, the mayor said.
Meanwhile, there were 95 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths in Bacolod City on Thursday, while Negros Occidental had 62, the Department of Health said.
This brings the total COVID-19 cases in Bacolod City to 3,514 and 64 deaths while Negros Occidental has 2,644 cases and 36 deaths.
