Maintenance work of Sky Fiber to cause slow connection for subscribers

MANILA, Philippines — Telecommunications firm Sky Cable Corp. on Thursday warned its fiber home internet customers that slow connection will be expected due to five-day maintenance activities.

“To our valued SKY Fiber subscribers, we’d like to inform you that Asia-America Gateway will be performing emergency maintenance activities on their subsea international cable systems starting Sept. 25 at 8 a.m. to Sept. 30 at 5 a.m.,” the company said in a statement.

“This will result in slow connection affecting social media web browsers and video streaming sites such as Facebook, Google and Netflix,” it added.

SKY Corp., meanwhile, vowed that it is working with “technology partners to minimize the effects of the activity to subscribers.”

The AAG is the first submarine cable system linking countries in Southeast Asia to Hong Kong, then Guam, to Hawaii, and eventually the United States’ East Coast.

The cable system provides connectivity between Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Philippines, Guam, Hawaii and the US West Coast.

Its maximum capacity is pegged at 1.92 terabits per second.

Telecommunications company PLDT made a similar announcement on Wednesday, alerting its customers about the effects of the AAG maintenance. [ac]
