Angeles City taps 200 home-based tailors for face mask, PPE project

ANGELES CITY—With no quick end in sight for the COVID-19 pandemic, the city government has decided to hire at least 200 home-based tailors to give them extra income by making face masks and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Many of the tailors are solo parents, persons with disability, stay-at-home parents and members of women’s groups, Mayor Carmelo Lazatin Jr. said.

“The only requirement [for the employment] is that they should have their sewing machine at home,” he said, adding that hiring began last August.

Several fashion designers in the city volunteered to help out in the face mask livelihood project.

The city government will provide the materials, which are due for delivery in October, while the city’s Public Employment Services Office (PESO) will collect the finished products.

Each tailor is expected to make 250 pieces of face masks per week and 20 PPE sets per month, according to Irish Bonus-Llego, head of the city government’s Economic Development Investment and Promotions Office.

Payment would be P4 per face mask and P300 per PPE set, according to PESO officer Maria Rosa Teodora Basilio.
