Soldier dead in clash with NPA in Leyte town

ACLOBAN CITY—A soldier was killed in a clash with guerrillas of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in Kananga town, Leyte province late on Sunday (Sept. 13).

Pfc Nicxon Tomenio was rushed to the OSPA Medical Center in Ormoc City but was declared dead on arrival there.

Reports reaching the Eastern Visayas police headquarters in Palo town, also in Leyte, said soldiers from the 93rd Infantry Battalion were on patrol when they encountered at least 10 rebels at Rizal village in Kananga around 6:50 p.m.

The gunfight lasted for at least 10 minutes.
