MANILA, Philippines — A lighthouse in the town of Hagonoy, Bulacan is again functional after being fixed by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said on Sunday.
According to a post on the DOTr’s Facebook page, the lighthouse, which serves as a guide for fisherfolk in the area, was fixed as of Saturday. It was re-installed near the mouth of the Hagonoy River.
“The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has successfully completed the re-installation of the Hagonoy Lighthouse in Bulacan,” DOTr said.
“According to PCG Commandant George Ursabia, the Hagonoy Lighthouse, which is located at the mouth of the Hagonoy River in Bulacan has been declared RESTORED to normal operations effective yesterday, 05 September 2020. The activity was witnessed by Hagonoy, Bulacan Councilor Kenneth Bautista,” it added.

The DOTr said fixing the lighthouse was important as it helps fisherfolk in the area with their navigation, especially at night when the water can get dark.
“Lighthouses, which are considered as an effective navigational aide, are vital to fishermen and mariners in the area, as it guides and helps them to safely navigate their voyage, especially at night,” the department noted.
This was not the first time that a lighthouse in Hagonoy drew attention. In 2012, a different lighthouse in the island village of Pugad, also in Hagonoy was fixed, much to the delight of residents.
Before the lighthouse was fixed, the residents of Pugad village had to endure eight years of dark nights as they go fishing in Manila Bay.
