Duterte wishes speedy recovery for resigned Japanese PM Abe

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday expressed sadness on the recent resignation of Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo over poor health.

“It is with much regret that I learned of Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s resignation. Through many years of our engagement, I have seen a leader with a bold vision and firm determination to do what was best for his country and our region,” Duterte said in a statement.

Duterte hopes a fast and full recovery for Abe. He added that bilateral relations between Japan and the Philippines flourished under Abe’s leadership.

“He is to me and the Filipino people — a true friend closer than a brother. To Prime Minister Abe, I pray for your speedy and full recovery,” Duterte said.

The President lauded the Japanese leader’s “kindness and strength of character.”

Abe, 65, revealed his resignation during a news conference on Friday. He has been battling ulcerative colitis for years.
