Manila police prepared for rallies in commemoration of Mendiola Massacre

MANILA, Philippines – The Manila Police District on Monday said that it was prepared for protest actions of various militant groups commemorating the 25th year of the Mendiola Massacre.

A Radyo Inquirer 990AM report quoted MPD director Chief Superintendent Alex Gutierrez as saying that they have fanned out policemen to secure Mendiola in anticipation of possible rallies within the day.

The report added that the Don Chino Roces Bridge, formerly known as Mendiola, has been closed off to motorists.

Thirteen were killed while 20 others were wounded after anti-riot officers opened fire at militant farmers in Mendiola back in January 22, 1987.
