Performance art lecture held

A PERFORMANCE art lecture was held on Jan. 18 at the Cebu City Museum, as part of the ongoing Cebu Contemporary Exhibit.

Event curator JV Castro brought the exhibit to Cebu after the success of its first run in Manila.

Castro said, “This lecture is a supplement to the on-going exhibit to promote other forms of visual art.”

Performance artist and speaker Yuan Moro Ocampo from Santiago City, Isabela, highlighted in his lecture the definition of  ‘performance art,’ which he said   is different from dance, theater and music. “Performance art is a visual art,” he explained.

“It is the way of expression with props and body as the medium,” he  added.

The lecture was attended by Cebuano artists who also displayed their paintings in the exhibit such as Palmy Pe-Tudtud and Dennis Monterra, art teachers and students from the University of the Philippines Cebu College and the University of San Carlos–Talamban Campus and other art enthusiasts.

The lecture was followed by a live art performance by Ocampo.

UP Cebu Humanities Professor Ligaya Visaya-Rabago said the lecture was “a food for thought.”

Ocampo said he is planning to conduct an international performance art festival this August, where schools will be invited.

Ocampo is the first Filipino scholar in the Art Institute of Indonesia, an art fellow in Charles Darwin University and  a member of the executive committee in the National Council for Culture and the Arts. /UP Masscom student annie fe perez
