Killing of Cotabato town police chief in the line of duty draws condemnation

KIDAPAWAN CITY–The killing on Tuesday (Aug. 25) of a town police chief in Cotabato province by gunmen involved in the assassination of an Indian national drew condemnation from top provincial and police officials.

Maj. Joan Resureccion, acting police chief of Carmen, was shot by companions of gunmen who had shot and killed an Indian engaged in the money lending business.

Carmen Mayor Moises Arendain said Resurrecion and another police officer were chasing the gunmen involved in the gun attack on the Indian when they were ambushed at the village of Poblacion in Carmen.

The two police officers, the mayor said, “were conducting pursuit operations against the gunmen but were ambushed shortly before 10 a.m.”

Cotabato Gov. Nancy Catamco condemned the killing of Resureccion and urged the provincial police force to bring justice to the slain police officer.

Police and military teams are now on the hunt for the assailants.
