Teachers’ group pushes ‘pass-or-fail’ grading system

MANILA, Philippines — A coalition of teachers on Saturday urged the Department of Education to consider adapting a “pass-or-fail” grading mechanism in consideration of students who will be transitioning to the department’s blended learning program in the upcoming school year.

In a statement, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines challenged the continued use of the numeric grading system, saying this would be unfair for underprivileged students.

“This [pass-or-fail evaluation mechanism] is more in keeping with education’s objective of arming the youth during a crisis and not further alienate them and add unnecessary pressure in their lives,” said ACT Philippines Secretary-General Raymond Basilio.
