CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – A 65-year-old male inmate at the Angeles City Jail has become the first recorded coronavirus disease (COVID-19) fatality of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Central Luzon.
The inmate died on August 15 and was described as immunocompromised, or someone who had a weak immune system.
Col. Arnel Gongona, BJMP regional director, said the jail was disinfected, and contract tracing procedures were undertaken. He did not say how the man was infected.
Detainees and BJMP personnel who showed flu-like symptoms were isolated and quarantined, he said in a statement on Saturday.
Angeles City has logged 219 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of August 21. TONETTE OREJAS
