Dolphins’ impromptu show in Misamis Oriental bay going viral

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—A pod of what spectators estimated to be at least 30 dolphins frolicked in Macajalar Bay in Misamis Oriental province on Friday (Aug. 21), providing a show that is becoming viral through a video posted on social media.

The video was posted by Manuel Tan on his Facebook account. As of this writing, the 36-second video has 858 shares and 977 reactions.

Tan, 33, a wedding planner and coordinator, said he and some friends were on their way to the town of Laguindingan in Misamis Oriental for a swim when they spotted the dolphins.

He said the speedboat they were riding was just a few meters from the shoreline in nearby Opol town and was about to proceed to Laguindingan when the group saw the dolphins.

In the video, Tan said there were some 30 dolphins that approached the speedboat, but in an interview, he said there were more of them, about a hundred, if viewed from a distance.

“Oh my God, it’s so nice,” Tan was heard exclaiming in the video, as some of the dolphins swam and showed their flippers.

“We turned off the speedboat’s engine so it won’t upset them,” Tan said, adding that the dolphins lingered for around 20 minutes before heading off to the eastern coast of Misamis Oriental.

He said that he noticed that as the dolphins left, a few of them swam away first, then, a few seconds later, the rest of the pod followed.

Tan said his group also saw calves in the pod.
